Planimetric Map

Planimetric maps are simple displays that show only horizontal features.  A good example of planimetric maps are road maps, like the one above.  Notice how the map does not indicate elevation.

Mental maps are personal perceptions of the surrounding world.  Such maps are unique to the individuals that create them from memory.  The above example is a hand drawn map, showing directions using landmarks and streets that are memorable to the creator.
